Deep Sea Dogfish (Squalidae)
Although not identified during the expedition of the NOAA research vessel Okeanos Explorer, I am reasonably confident this is a species of gulper shark or dogfish. The presence of spines on both dorsal fins and body shape suggest either Squalidae or Centrophoridae. Deep sea sharks have always fascinated me - maybe it's their otherworldly eyes or how little is known about them. All I know for sure is this will be the first of many deep sea shark paintings.
